Pipe Organ and Concert Band – a rare combination?

The combination of Pipe Organ and Concert Band is unusual and compositions and arrangements for this combination are scarce enough. However in the case of pipe organ and orchestra, Michael Barone’s interesting and very comprehensive article on this subject points out that there is a considerable repertoire for this combination dating from the organ concertos of Handel right up to the present day.

For pipe organ and concert band there is some notable repertoire.

Celebration Fanfare for Organ and Concert Band by Satoshi Yagisawa was composed in 2009 for a commission by Shinjuku Bunka Center to commemorate its thirty years since its opening. It is an impressive work with a brilliant, bright fanfare, and the stately sound of the church organ reverberating through the concert hall. Of course Saint-Saens ‘Organ Symphony’ No. 3 is an obvious candidate for arrangement for concert band and Howard Lorriman’s version is available from Obrasso (BT.OBR15821).

We also have the Czech composer Ivana Laudova’s Concerto for Organ, Percussion and Wind Orchestra which was commissioned by the American Wind Symphony and Concerto for Organ, Winds and Percussion (2015) by Marco Pütz from Luxembourg (Edition Kunzelmann) This four movement work was Commissioned by the Festival International d’Orgue de Dudelange and the Ministry of Culture, Luxembourg.

Not least there is David Maslanka’s Symphony No. 4 for Band and Organ (1994). An excellent performance by the University of Texas is available on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0c8RWPUmq0

For those seeking a lighter piece for organ and band there is the aptly titled Organ Roccata arranged by Brendan Power This takes highlights from the Baroque era and well known organ pieces and woven them into an exciting medley for solo organ and band driven by an infectious rock rhythm throughout. Arrangement includes - Toccata in D minor (Bach), Hallelujah Chorus (Handel), Arrival of the Queen of Sheba (Handel), Trumpet Voluntaries by Clarke and Purcell, Toccata in F (Widor) and Rondeau (Purcell).
